agile insight
Sprint Tracking is the activity that Agile teams perform to monitor the progress of a sprint. Each team member typically updates the remaining effort or both the effort completed and remaining of their tasks daily. The remaining effort represents the true state of a sprint at any given time and is represented visually in the sprint burndown chart. As the sprint progresses, the remaining effort required to complete the iteration's tasks should decrease. By consistently managing the total remaining effort of all the tasks, a very clear picture of the overall sprint status is communicated. If at any given point during the sprint it appears that the remaining work will not approach zero by the end of the sprint, the team and/or management may elect to take appropriate measures, such as reducing scope.

V1 Sprint Tracking Step-by-Step

Track Member Progress Centrally

Sprint Tracking lists all the backlog items and defects in a sprint along with their tasks and tests. The page allows you to enter your expended Effort, if applicable, and remaining effort (To Do) against each workitem as well as update task, test, backlog item or defect information as appropriate. The Storyboard, a feature that Kanban teams will be particularly interested in, is also located here.

  • Select Sprint Tracking in the main menu.

  • Use the Taskboard view to see a summary of all current work for the team, have team members sign up for new tasks and track progress for the tasks. Click and drag the tasks to reflect Status changes.

  • Use the storyboard to track the status of an entire backlog item from the time it is pulled into the sprint until it is accepted by the Product Owner.

  • Use the Detail Tracking page to see a tree view of the teams work and track progress.

    • (Optional) On the Detail Tracking page, Customize the page view to show the extended Effort column to be able to define which member worked the hours being logged.

    • Enter the expended Effort, if applicable, and remaining effort (To Do) on each activity since the last update.

    • Select Apply to save the changes.

  • Use the Testboard view to see a summary of tests. Click and drag the individual tests to mark as passing or failing.

transition overview

  • Transitions are shortcuts that allow you to impact multiple values with a single action. The transitions show up as options in the action menus on grids and the Taskboard / Testboard pages. Use Quick Close to close items and optionally update status. Use Sign Up to assign yourself as owner and optionally update status. A default set of status updates are applied when Transitions are enabled. System Administrators have the ability to modify the status values for each type of update, including the ability to make no change at all. Transitions are automatically enabled when systems are upgraded, so be sure to review the configured Status values to ensure they are appropriate for your organization.

  • Close completed workitems.

Track Member Progress Individually

  • Select My Home in the main menu. The My Home Summary lists the workitems assigned directly to you, as well as the parent backlog items or defects in which you own tasks or tests.

  • Enter your expended Effort, if applicable, and remaining effort estimate (To Do).

  • Update status values that have changed.

  • Select Apply to save any changes.

  • Close completed workitems.

(Optional) Manage Issues

  • (Optional) Review and manage issues identified by the team that can hamper team performance or delivery.

Close Completed Sprint

  • Clean up a sprint when it has been completed:

    • Update workitem status values, log effort (if appropriate) and zero out To Do for completed work.

    • Move unstarted work to the next sprint.

    • Split partially complete backlog items to move the unfinished portion forward while leaving completed work in the current sprint.

    • Close all completed workitems.

  • Close the sprint to both close the current sprint and Activate the next one.
