Strategic Themes

Align your portfolio level epics to the C-level strategy driving your company's efforts. Strategic Themes represent a way to guide the planning and prioritization of your top-level epics by identifying the specific strategic areas or objectives to which they align.

Manage your Strategic Themes using a new tabbed drawer at the bottom of the Epic Tree page. Assign Strategic Themes to top-level epics in your Epic Tree using a multi-select control to allow you to match a given Epic to one or more Strategic Themes. Utilize the Strategic Themes association when prioritizing your initiatives within or across Strategic Themes. You can filter by Strategic Theme or just view the supported Strategic Themes for each epic in the Epic Tree. The Filter is also available on other epic views: the Epicboard and Epic Timeline.

Epic Timeline DrilldownEpic Timeline Drilldown

Have you ever had a desire to see that next level of detail when looking at the Epic Timeline to get a better understanding? Ever wonder if the dates shown for an initiative truly represent the feature-level detail below? Now you can find out with a single click using the new drill-down option on the Epic Timeline. Just expand an epic to see all of its child epics laid out right within the timeline view. With visible child epics, you can know what's done, what's left to do and whether the dates align with the higher level epic plans.

Now Sorted by Order

The rank order of your epics is now the primary driver of the Epics layout on the Timeline, allowing you to understand the relative prioritization of items being displayed. Your Epic timeline now shows items in the same relative order as they are displayed in the Epic Tree and the Epicboard.

Board Headers Remain Visible

The column headers on all board views now remain visible even when scrolling down long pages of content so you can always identify the columns in use. This update applies to:

This update has been backported to the prior release as well.

Core Reporting Updates

In this release we continue to make progress on the technology updates to reports available in the core Lifecycle application.  The changes in this release made it possible to view the new reports in all editions of the Lifecycle product.  It also rectified differences between the inline and non-inline versions of the reports.  Furthermore, many reports that were previously only available inline are now available from the Reports page.  Finally, the Member Dashboard and the Member Group Dashboard received a significant facelift.

Updates

The following Reports were updated.

EnhancedMember Load Trend Report

In addition to the technology update, the following reports were also enhanced in other ways.

  • Capacity Planning
    • Capacity values are now shown as stacked bars beside the Detail Estimate stacked bar. This enables better comparison of Capacity and Detail Estimate.
  • Member Load Trend
    • This report is now available from the Reports page in addition to the previous inline locations.
    • Capacity values are now shown as stacked bars beside the Detail Estimate stacked bar. This enables better comparison of Capacity and Detail Estimate.
  • Member Group Load Trend
    • This report is now available from the Reports page in addition to the previous inline locations.
    • Capacity values are now shown as stacked bars beside the Detail Estimate stacked bar. This enables better comparison of Capacity and Detail Estimate.
  • Team Burndown
    • This report now contains an Epic filter.
  • Team Estimate Trend
    • This report now contains an Epic filter.
  • Team Test Trend
    • This report now contains an Epic filter.
  • Test Runs
    • This Report is now always visible on the Reports page.  Previously it was only visible if the selected Project had a Test Suite assigned.
    • Added a Test Suite. filter.  This filter shows all Test Suites configured for the selected Project and all child Projects.   If a specific Test Suite is not selected, the report will show results from all all Test Suites configured for the selected Project and all child Projects.
  • Velocity Trend
    • This chart now supports viewing the Velocity from Other Projects, the Target Estimate attribute value, and the the Average Velocity Line.  These values were previously only available on the inline version of this chart.
  • Workitem Cycle Time
    • This report is now available from the Reports page in addition to the previous inline locations.

Member Dashboard

MemberDashboard.pngThe style of the Member Dashboard was updated to align with other reporting dashboards in the system. We reduced the number of filters available on the report and updated the table to include TestSet counts when Regression Testing is enabled. Additionally, we replaced the "Trend - Member" panel with a panel that makes it easier to understand how ToDo and Done compare to Detail Estimate. Additionally, we added two new panels. The first is a Member Actuals Trend panel that provides insight on where effort is being performed.  Second, is a Workitem Cumulative Flow diagram that provides insight into the progress of backlog status over time for workitems owned by the selected member.

Member Group Dashboard

MemberGroupDashboard.pngThe style of the Member Group Dashboard was updated to align with other reporting dashboards in the system.  The three existing charts were updated and the Member Actuals table at the bottom of the page was replaced with panel, containing the same data.  The updated panels have a new color series which will reduce the likelihood of duplicate colors occurring on the charts.  If Effort Tracking is disabled, this dashboard will contains 2 panels: ToDo by Project and Current Member Load for all Projects.  If Effort Tracking is enabled, then 2 additional panels appear on the dashboard: Done by Project and Member Actuals.

Other Changes:

  • Added support for exporting charts to the CSV format.
  • Added an option to the following reports that ignores the current project selection and reports on all projects visible to the logged in member. This option is disabled by default.

Data Mart Updates

The Data Mart was updated to enable reporting on Strategic Themes. To accomplish this, the following tables were added

  • Dim.StrategicTheme
    • This table contains the current attribute values for Strategic Themes.
  • Dim.StrategicThemeLevel
    • This table contains all of the list values used for the Strategic Theme level attribute.
  • Bridge.EpicStrategicTheme
    • This table is used to map the muli-mulit relationship between Strategic Themes and Epics.  This table only shows the current relationships and does not provide access to historical assignments.

Fixed:

  • Dim.Team now contains an AssetState field
  • Increased logging around extract queries and insert operations when debugging is enabled.

Analytics

The Analtyics updates for Winter 2015 includes forecasting options for the Epic Burn Up chart and support for reporting on Strategic Themes.

Monte Carlo Simulation on Epic Burn-up and Support for linear forecasting

EpicBurnup.pngThe Monte Carlo Simulation feature is no longer limited to Projects.  You can now run these simulations on Initiatives, Features or any other Epic defined in VersionOne.   The new Epic BurnUp Monte Carlo Simulation panel provides a range of possible delivery dates based on a Monte Carlo Simulation using existing Burn-up data on an Epic.  The distribution is annotated with percentile markers, or confidence bars, to indicate the 50th, 75th, 85th, and 95th percentile.

Additionally, we added support for linear forecasting to the existing EPic Burn-Up panel.  When enabled, a dotted forecast line is drawn from the last point on the burn-up to indicate the date the Total Estimate line would be reached.  The calculation for the forecast line can one of the following:

  • Average - Uses the Average of all previous slope values
  • Optimistic - Uses the steepest previous slope value
  • Pessimistic - Uses the lowest, non-zero, slope value
  • Most Frequent - Uses the non-zero slope value that occurs most often.  If none of the slope values repeat, this calculation uses the Average.

Both of these panels are available on all Analytics Dashboards and in Planning Rooms.

Reporting on Strategic Themes

  • The Epic Progress Report panel, available on the Analytic Dashboards and in Planning Rooms, can now be filtered on Strategic themes defined in VersionOne.
  • The Custom Reporting meta data was updated to enable reporting on Strategic Themes.  To accomplish this, the Data Sources tables were added
    • Strategic Theme Details
      • This data source contains the current attribute values for Strategic Themes
    • Strategic Theme
      • This data source is used to map the muli-mulit relationship between Strategic Themes and Epics.  It will appear when you select the Epic Details data source.  You must also add the Strategic Theme Details data source in order to filter or report on Strategic Theme attribute values..

Fixed:

  • SQL timeout and display issues when presenting large volumes of Epics on the Epic Progress Report dashboard panel .
  • The Epic Progress Report will now display information on child epics regardless of project selection.
  • The percentile lines on the Monte Carlo simulation Project Burndown are correct.
  • The Defect Summary Report failed when reporting on Epics.  As part of this we also addressed a few other cosmetic issues and inconsistency between the panel and the chart.
  • Project Tree on Dashboards and Analtyic grids do not always match Project Tree in the core product
  • ToDo line on Sprint Burndown does not end at the current date.
  • Cannot filter Custom Reports on team to show only active teams.
  • Defect Trend, Story Count By Iteration and Velocity Trend behave correctly when the Dashboard Project is changed to a Project using a different schedule.
  • Custom Reporting drill through works when the drill through label contains < or > characters.

Other Reporting Fixes in the Core Application

  • The Velocity Trend Report header properly displays the range of Sprints/Iterations contained in the report.
  • Current Member Load panel on the Iteration/Sprint dashboard respects the Team filter.
  • Sprint/Iteration Dashboard defaults to the correct Iteration for the selected Project.
  • The color is correct for the Sprint/Iteration Burn Down line.
  • Dates are correct in the date based panels on the Sprint/Iteration dashboard.
  • Resolved errors that sometimes occur when changing dates on the Sprint/Iteration dashboard after previous values were saved.
  • Detail Estimate Trend fails when a Workitem Type is selected.
  • Dates Filters on Reports have issues in other locales.
  • Improved performance on the query used to generate the Member Load reports.
  • Current Member Load charts fails gracefully when here is no qualifying data qualifies for the report.
  • Feature Group filters no longer include closed feature groups.
  • Test Trend results are accurate when a Feature Group filter is applied.
  • Test Trend report reflects current day changes.
  • Test Trend reports only considers the final value when a status change occurs on a previous date.

Platform Updates

CommitStreamAssetView.pngNew! CommitStream™

Developed by VersionOne as an open-source project, CommitStream is a tightly integrated yet loosely coupled service that provides a real time view into the code commits that a team is making, and is viewable from VersionOne workitem detail pages and a TeamRoom™ panel. CommitStream can easily scale agile across teams and has pre-built support for the most popular version control systems. CommitStream reduces the administrative burden of maintaining independent connections to version control systems and allows teams to practice agile their way.

Key benefits of CommitStream include:

  • Consolidated commit information from different VCS systems across multiple repositories for a single view of code and team health
  • Real time and relevant view of actual code changes and how they relate to the delivery of planned work
  • Seamless integration with VersionOne workitems (Stories, Defects, Tasks, Tests, etc.) and TeamRoom
  • Quick access to diffs of committed code changes, who authored them, the branch they are in, and their repository
  • Extensible plug-in architecture for adding other VCS systems
  • Developed as an open-source project fully supported by VersionOne

CommitStream is currently offered as a limited release, and is available with a GitHub connector only. If you're a GitHub user and are interested in becoming an early adopter of CommitStream, please send us an email at commitstream@versionone.com.

New! Simplified API Authentication

VersionOne supports connecting to our API using a variety of authentication methods including VersionOne Basic authentication (username and password), Windows Integrated Authenticated (NTLM), or more recently, OAuth2. In order to simplify and streamline how external applications access our API, VersionOne is introducing a new authentication type - VersionOne Access Tokens. More secure than basic authentication, yet much simpler to use than OAuth2, VersionOne Access Tokens provide a secure, yet easy to create and use authentication method that can be used for API access no matter what authentication type your VersionOne instance is configured to use, including SSO.

Key advantages of using VersionOne Access Tokens include:

  • Easy to create and revoke
  • Simple to pass in the authorization header of an HTTP request
  • Smaller in size than OAuth2 tokens
  • Works with all types of VersionOne authentication configurations including VersionOne Basic, Windows Integrated Authentication (NTLM), and SSO

OAuth2 was introduced to provide API access for SSO-enabled instances, and is most applicable for web applications that can process a callback from VersionOne. However, VersionOne Access Tokens provide a much simpler way to access the API and are now the recommended approach.

To learn more about VersionOne Access Tokens, see Access Token Authentication.

Updated! VersionOne Java SDK (v13.0.0.2)

  • Added: V1APIConnector.setUserAgentHeader method for custom user-agent string
  • Updated: Recompiled and tested with JVM 1.7

For documentation and downloads, see VersionOne Java SDK

API Changes

New: Grant Asset

The Grant asset was created in support of VersionOne Access Tokens and contains the following attributes:

  • Name (Text): The name of the grant
  • Owner (Single-relation to Member): The Member that created the grant

Currently the Grant asset has a one-to-one mapping with the Permitted Apps that a Member creates. Future enhancement of the Grant asset is likely.

New: StrategicTheme Asset

The StrategicTheme asset was created to reflect the alignment of epics with company strategic objectives.

  • Name (Text): The title of the strategic theme
  • Description (Text): The description of the strategic theme
  • Level (ListType): The hierarchy level that the strategic theme is associated with
  • Epics (Multi-relation to Epics): The Epics associated with the strategic theme

General Platform Fixes:

  • OAuth2 permitted app not deactivated when a member is deactivated
  • Images cannot be retrieved or uploaded when using OAuth2 and the attachment.img endpoint

Miscellaneous

  • Asset name changes were made in the default user interface files. Any company-specific localization entries made will override this update.
