Program Board

The Program Board was initially available in Winter 2016 as a limited availability feature. The VersionOne Product Team would like to thank the customers who participated in the early release program and provided feedback.  

You've invested a significant amount of time and money into selecting and planning, features for your next SAFe Program Increment, or product Release.  Isn't it important to verify that those features are planned, and that dependencies are satisfied in a logical order before sending your teams off to build those features?  If you answered YES!, then you will be excited to start using the Program Board.  

The Program Board summarizes cross-team feature dependencies so you can identify and focus on the communications that will matter most.  It enables you to see which teams are delivering work for a given feature (Portfolio Item) and when they plan to deliver the feature based on backlog items planned into sprints/iterations.  Additionally, it allows you see dependencies across teams and features, identify when those dependencies are being delivered out of order and highlight areas for communication between teams. 

At a glance, you can determine:

  • When Portfolio Items have not been planned.

  • Which teams are responsible for delivering portfolio items in the program increment/release.

  • Identify dependencies between teams.

  • Identify dependencies between portfolio items.

  • When portfolio items are not completely planned.

  • Portfolio items in the program increment/release that have work planned into sprints/iterations beyond the planned end date.

  • Portfolio items in the program increment/release that have work in another program increment/release.

In addition to being able to verify your planning session, this board can be used throughout the program increment/release to track delivery progress. 

WSJF (Weighted Shortest Job First) Ranking

WSJF Ranking

The Scaled Agile Framework or SAFe prescribes using a method called Weighted Shortest Job First, or WSJF, when deciding what features to work on first. This method combines Business Value, Time Criticality and Risk Reduction inputs to create a combined Cost of Delay value. WSJF is then calculated by dividing the Cost of Delay by the job estimated size, or Swag. The items with the largest WSJF value should be worked on first.

These new values are now attributes of portfolio items at any level - initiative, epic or feature, and can be viewed and changed in the item detail view or in the Portfolio Tree grid. The grid can be sorted by any of the values and the WSJF rank can be saved as your new ranking for the Portfolio Tree.

The Portfolio Bubble Chart also allows using these values as any one of the chart dimensions.

WSJF ranking is available in all the places where you view your portfolio items:

Team Release Scheduling / PI Planning Support

PI Planning

You can now assign features directly to teams as part of your release planning activities. Whether creating a rough-cut plan prior to story-level elaboration or assigning a set of fully fleshed out stories, you can use the Release Scheduling page to assign both a release and team to an entire portfolio item and any attached backlog below it in one swift drag. This feature is a perfect match for the SAFe PI Planning session where the plan for a 10-week program increment is created by and for multiple teams. 

This new capability is enabled by:  

  • A direct relationship between portfolio items and teams via a new Target Team field on the portfolio item.

  • An update to the Release Scheduling page to allow selection of a team to show its backlog.

  • Drag-and-drop capabilities from any backlog in Release Scheduling directly to a team.

Portfolio Timeline

The Portfolio Timeline can now be used to drive your scheduling. The view has been updated to allow a portfolio item to be selected and dragged left or right to change the Begin and End Date of the portfolio item. 

  • select any listed portfolio item to enable the drag 

  • drag the entire portfolio item left or right to change begin and end

  • drag the left or right edge to change only begin or end

  • updated styling, including full height of each bar used show progress

Portfolio Item Subscriptions

The portfolio item asset is now supported by subscriptions. This allows you to receive alert notifications when events occur relating to portfolio items. You can also filter the subscriptions to further narrow down the alerts you receive. The following subscriptions are supported:

  • Portfolio Item Created

  • Portfolio Item Closed

  • Portfolio Item Deleted

  • Portfolio Item Reopened

  • Portfolio Item Status Changed

Terminology Override Page

The Planning Level drop-down list attribute was added to projects to indicate how the specific node is being used in the project hierarchy.  The values for the drop-down are specified in the Administration section on the Global tab under List Types.  When this attribute is set on a project, any new child project will automatically be assigned the next value from the list.  This behavior is identical to how portfolio item types are assigned.  Additionally, the label on the "Add" button in Release Planning is automatically set to show the next value in the list; so instead of always seeing "Add Project", you may see something like "Add Release", or "Add Program Increment".  The Planning Level attribute is visible on project hovers and is available on project grids as a column or a filter. The Project Timeline can be filtered on this attribute as well.

Terminology Overrides

Terminology Override Page

The ability to override the Terminology used within Lifecycle was moved to a new location in the Administration section. To access it, click on the Administration menu, select Configuration, and then click on the Terminology tab. This change expands the limited set of terms you could override before on the Configuration page. The new page allows you to override the labels used to identify managed assets in the Lifecycle product (Project, Portfolio Item, Story, Defect, Issue, Request, etc). It also supports overriding select terms in the main navigation menu, measurement attributes on Portfolio Items and Work Items,  and specifying the units of measure. Changes on this page take effect immediately once the Save button is clicked.

Data Mart


  • The following Dimension Tables now include additional columns to indicate when the item was closed and by whom. After an asset is closed, values in these columns are set and do not change unless the asset is subsequently re-opened. The new columns are called ClosedDateUTC, ClosedDateKey, ClosedByID, and ClosedByDate.

Panel Parameters on Enterprise Dashboard


  • Enterprise Dashboard Panels were updated with the following changes:

    • You can now filter any panel to a specific project or program allowing insight into Throughput, Predictability, Responsiveness, and Quality metrics of specific areas in your organization.

    • You can now choose whether a metric is based on the Date an item is "Complete", as defined by the Reporting Categories, or the date the item was Closed or archived. While they typically occur close to each other, these dates have different meanings in some organizations and being able to report on them independently is important.

    • On the Portfolio Item Throughput panel, you can now choose to report Throughput on Total Value, Total Swag, or  Portfolio Item Count.

    • On the Backlog Item Throughput panel, you can choose to report Throughput on Total Estimate, or Backlog Item Count.

  • Planning Level attribute is available on the Project Details Data Source

  • The following Data Objects now include an attribute to indicate when the item was closed and by whom. Once an asset is Closed, value in these columns are set and do not change unless the asset is subsequently re-opened. The new attributes are called Closed Date UTC, and Closed By Name.

  • The dates used in the queries for By Project and By Iteration dashboard panels are off by 1 day.

  • Portfolio Item Completion (aka Feature Completion) and Portfolio Item Progress Report do not properly display Portfolio Item names when they contain the following characters: ", ', <, >, &

Integration Updates

Following the announcement of ALM Connect support for the following integrations will follow the VersionOne sunset policy.  ALM Connect offers advantages over our standard out of the box integrations including benefits such as integration updates as well as integration customization.

Sunset Policy Update

The sunset policy for integrations has been updated from 4 revisions to 3 revisions to be consistent with current versions of Lifecycle support.


Formerly known as "DevOps Center", DeliveryStream was offered in limited release in the Fall 2015 Release and is now released for general availability. DeliveryStream allows you to trigger Continuum automation within Lifecycle workitems. Tasks such as running pipelines, tasks, or triggering canvas can now be triggered directly in Lifecycle with a single click. Visit the DeliveryStream page for more information.

​New: External Action Invocation Asset

An External Action Invocation represents each execution of an action on DeliveryStream. It has the following attributes:

  • CausedBy (longtext): Relationship to the action (External Action) configured on DeliveryStream.
  • InvokedOn (text):  Relationship to the workitem on which the action was executed.
  • Sent (Blob): Payload that was sent to the remote system (Continuum) upon action execution.
  • Received (Blob): Payload that was received from the remote system (Continuum) upon action execution.
  • StatusCode (LongInt): HTTP status code for the action execution.

Platform Updates

CommitStream: Visual Studio Team Services Integration

CommitStream support for Visual Studio Team Services (formerly Visual Studio Online) was made available in Winter 2016 point release no. 4 ( For more information visit the CommitStream page.

Sunset: OAuth Authentication

For the Spring 2017 release we have removed OAuth Authentication from the UI for new installs. Access Token authentication will be the preferred authentication method for our platform. Access Tokens provide a secure and streamlined approach for authenticating with the VersionOne API. They are more secure than Basic Authentication, yet much simpler to use than OAuth 2.0 Authentication. We ask customers who are using OAuth to please start planning to transition to Acces Token authentication. More information will be distributed in upcoming releases.

Product Workflow Visualization

Continuum Workitem History Visualization

You can now define the workflow for any product that is defined in your Continuum instance. Defining its workflow will allow you to visualize the development phases for the product (ie. Development, Test, Production) as well as all the Pipelines that have been executed for each of the projects under a particular product. For more information, see Continuum online Help.

Continuum now offers a visual representation of all the steps & automation a particular workitem has participated in. The new view is available by simply clicking on the workitem name (i.e. S-12345) from the "Perspectives" menu. 


System Requirements Changes

New updates include:

  • Updated the Team selection control.

  • Updated styling on the Project Timeline. 

  • The following terms have been changed:

    • "Build Project" has been renamed "Pipeline"

    • "BuildRun" has been renamed "Pipeline Run"

    • "BuildRun Contents" report has been renamed "Pipeline Run Contents"

Some feature and usability updates were made and rolled out in point releases, including:

  • Faster selection of multiple items in the grid - Click on the first item, then Shift+Click on the last item and all of the items in between will be selected.

  • There are several new ranking options in the Portfolio Tree multi–action menu, similar to what's already available in the Backlog grid. You can now rank your portfolio tree faster by selecting one or more items and applying a quick move to one of these spots in the grid:

    • Top of Selected Project

    • Top of List

    • Move to Page...

    • Bottom of List

    • Bottom of Selected Project

    • Rank by WSJF (see above for more info)

  • In TeamRoom, you can now drag an item from the Storyboard back to the Backlog tab to remove it from the iteration/sprint.

  • The cut lines on the Backlog tab in TeamRoom now has the iteration/sprint name on the line, helping you visualize what items can be completed in future iterations/sprints.

  • Start Date Defaults to the latter of the Project Start Date or the date one year in the past from today for the following reports

    • Cumulative Flow

    • Cumulative Flow by Status

    • Defect Resolution Trend

    • Defect Status Trend

    • Iteration Burndown

    • Portfolio Item Cumulative Flow

    • Work Item Trend

  • Scorecard (and other reports) in TeamRoom fails to load when user does not have access to TeamRoom's scope

  • Defect Priority Trend menu item opens Defect Trend report


Some feature and usability updates were made and rolled out in point releases, including:

  • The Portfolio Item Progress Report panel/chart and the Feature Completion panel/chart show Portfolio Items regardless of Strategic Theme assignment

  • Defects by Project panel in Analytics received several updates

    • Only immediate child projects are shown and lower nodes in the hierarchy roll-up to these projects

    • Projects are ordered by End Date, then Start Date.

    • The selected project no longer appears in the list

    • Grouping honors the defined value order

  • Analytics Time In Status Scatter Plot continues to count days after an item is closed

  • The following panels were added to the Enterprise Dashboard Panels in Analytics

    • Blocked Item Throughput

    • Defects Created vs Stories Closed

Encrypted Data At Rest (New Offering)

Customers now have the option of upgrading their security to go beyond the standard SSL encryption of all data in transit and add a layer of encryption for stored data within VersionOne's data centers as well. While the data centers offer strong physical and electronic security, encrypting stored data provides an extra layer of security for those organizations need it due to regulation or extreme sensitivity of their data. 

ALM Connect (New Offering)

ALM Connect is a new integration solution for connecting VersionOne to the world’s most popular application lifecycle management (ALM) systems. It provides seamless bi-directional or uni-directional integrations, field-level mapping, custom configuration rules and automated conflict resolution. Adding ALM Connect to VersionOne ensures visibility and coordination across today’s complex development processes and heterogeneous development environments.  For more information on ALM Connect please contact your sales executive.
