I'm getting occasional, though consistent, application errors when using VersionOne. This doesn't seem to be happening to anyone else on my team and it doesn't happen for me as much when I use Firefox. What's going wrong?

The VersionOne application runs only HTML and Javascript on the client, so there's nothing in the code that is powerful enough to trigger a browser crash directly unless there is a bug in IE. An exception to this that we have seen in a few cases in the past is the existence of a Browser Helper Object (BHO) that was causing the crash.

Wikipedia defines a BHO as a DLL module designed as a plugin for IE to provide added functionality. That would be things like extensions, plugins and toolbars. BHO's can be legitimate or malicious. Most spyware utilizes BHOs, so running a check using an anti-spyware tool may help. We have also seen a case where a buggy BHO in a legitimate product was causing conflicts in IE and triggering a crash as well. 3rd party toolbars are BHOs, and some legitimate commercial products can cause instability with IE (& Firefox).

Our recommendations:

  1. Run Windows Update to ensure you're on the latest version of IE

  2. Disable/uninstall any 3rd party toolbars (disable by un-checking them in the toolbar menu, accessed by right-clicking on the toolbar area)

  3. If the problem persists, run a spyware check using a tool such as HijackThis or Spybot

  4. Users have reported that clearing their cookie cache has also resolved issues with IE crashing due to MSXML5 errors

  5. If that doesn't do it, you may find more help in the associated article from Microsoft.

Remember, the application does also support the Firefox and Chrome browsers, so that can be used as an alternative to IE if the above steps do not provide a remedy to the issue.
