Formatting Links to Documents on a Shared File Server
Generally, the process is straight forward, but can be tricky when referencing documents on a shared file server. To prevent access issues, use the formats shown in the examples below:
Website: http://www.company.net/background.html
Wiki:http://projectsite/wiki/ProjectVision
Network Document: file://///fileserver/projectx/vision.doc (see notes below)
The Network Document format works correctly for both IE and Firefox (yes, there are 5 slashes after the 'file:'). Be sure that the file server is accessible to all who may need to reference the document by using this format.
For security reasons, some browsers prevent linked access to local/network files, but you can still access linked files on a network by:
- right clicking, copying the link address, and manually pasting the URL into the browser nav bar, or
- installing a browser-specific extension that enables directly opening file links
