The Detail Planning page shows the list of the workitems in the current sprint along with any associated tasks and acceptance tests. This page is useful for identifying, assigning, and estimating the activities required to complete the backlog scheduled in the sprint.

  • In the the Iteration Summary (or Sprint Summary) section, you can compare rollup values of the current sprint 's contents with those of the last closed sprint.

  • In the Backlog Details section, you can define Detailed Estimate and track progress directly at the backlog item or defect level. You can also create tasks or tests to further breakdown work for the team.

Accessing Detail Planning

From the main menu, select Sprint Planning (or Iteration Planning), and then Detail Planning.

Creating a Task or Test for a Workitem

There are two ways to create tasks or tests. Choose the one that works best for you.

Option 1. In the Story Planner

The Story Planner is most helpful during sprint planning, as it allows the team to focus in on one backlog item at a time and fully define its details. Here, you can also add, edit, and prioritize tasks and acceptance tests for the story by dragging and dropping them to the appropriate location.

  1. From the main menu, select Sprint Planning (or Iteration Planning) and then Detail Planning.

  2. To the right of a story, click on the Plan Backlog Item or Plan Story button. The Backlog Item Planner window opens.

  3. Click Add Task or Add Test.

  4. Enter the details, and then click Save to return to the Story Planner window.

    • Close the Story Planner window to return to the Detail Planning page.

Option 2. Directly within the Backlog Details Grid

This method can be helpful when a quick item or two needs to be added and there is no need to prioritize the details.

  1. From the main menu, select Sprint Planning (or Iteration Planning) and then Detail Planning.

  2. To the right of a story, click on the row action menu drop-down arrow, and then click Add Task or Add Test.

  3. Enter the details in the pop-up window, and then click Save.

Detail Estimates are established during sprint planning and are left as is for the remainder the sprint. Typically, just the remaining To Do estimates (and not the original detail estimate) are updated throughout the tracking process.

Editing a Task or Test

You can also edit tasks and tests directly in within the grid's editable columns. Click the Edit button to view the full details of any task or test or to modify attributes. The Details view can also be used to make edits, hold conversations, add links and file attachments, and to view history.

Assigning a Task or a Test to a Member

Option 1. Sign Me Up

To quickly sign up for a task yourself:

  1. In the grid row menu, click on the Sign Me Up option.

Option 2. Assign Someone Else

To assign a task or test to a member, follow these steps:

  1. In the grid row menu, select Edit.

  2. Place your cursor in the Owners field, and then select a name from the quick list.

    •  If the owner is not displayed in the list, type three characters to display a list of matching names.

  3. Repeat Step 2 to add the remaining owners, such as when practicing pair programming.

  4. Click Save.

Tasks, tests, backlog items, defects and test sets in the current sprint will display on the My Home page of each owner. Detail estimates will be applied to each owner in reports and other data views.
