Overview

Learn how to create a new sprint (also called an iteration) to your team's basic planning period.

Before You Begin

  • Your Admin Privileges role must be set to "Project Lead" or higher.
  • Schedule security (including sprint security and adding sprints) is driven by your Admin Privileges role. To manage a sprint, your Admin Privileges role must be set to "Project Lead" or higher.

  • Your Project Role determines what you can do on the Sprint Scheduling pages, but does not control if you can manage schedules and sprints.

How to Create a Sprint

  1. In the main menu, select Iteration Planning > Iteration Scheduling.

  2. Select a project in the Project Navigator.

  3. Click on the Iteration Scheduling tab, and then click Add Sprint (or Add Iteration).

  4. Enter the information in the required fields.

    • (Optional) To set the expected amount of estimate to plan for future sprints, set a target velocity for the sprint.

  5. Click Save.

Next Steps

After you have added the sprint, go to the Sprint/Iteration Scheduling page to to begin adding items from your backlog.

The Project Hierarchy

A project can have its own unique sprint schedule or can share an existing schedule created for another project. If the schedule is shared, all sprints created for the schedule are available to all projects sharing that schedule.

Projects can also create their own sprint schedule. This provides greater flexibility and allows different teams to utilize different schedules within a higher-level project and also allows sprint targets to be set at more specific levels. The tradeoff is that it limits the rollup capabilities up the project hierarchy for those metrics that are sprint-specific.
